I just got my strings and cables changed. It's been 3 1/2 years. I know everyone says every year but me string showed no signs of wear until recently. ( and I shoot a lot) Plus If they are going to stretch any I want it to do it before the season starts. (8 weeks) But I do relegiuosly wax the string and hot wax it once a year.
When do you guys change your strings? and what do you do to keep them in good condition? Do you do strings and cables or just strings?

Every year. I shoot alot, but what I find really hurts them is all the time in the field. Always rubbing on brush, trees, on the ground, dirt etc etc. replace them in the winter after the hunting season is over, good for the year.

Well the strings I had on there were the original that came with my mission bow. They held up great. It has just been this past month I noticed that there was a few strand around the peep and my serving was starting to fray. I know I could just replace the serving but I figured it was time to get new ones. I'm getting barracuda strings put on. I think the bow original came with zebra strings. I am actually surprised the strings lasted so long. But I try to keep on top of waxing it and use the serving stuff for the sevings. The cables were fine but might as well replace both then I have no worries for a while.
It's also getting put back to specs so hopefully that will do something. I never had any problems with the bow at all. I would recommend a Mission bow to anyone. Great bow and costs a lot less then the big names. Even a few of my buddies who own a Z-7 and a monster and a Hoyt ( can't remember the name) are impressed at how quiet and smooth it shoots.

Mission is a Mathews company actually. It is their cheaper line of Bows. I have heard great things about them also. I have also heard great things about the diamond bows, who are owned by bowtech--- same deal. (sorry to get off topic...lol)

I just had new string and cable put on my Truth (original version) and this will be my 4th hunting season with it.

Also had the anchor bow sight installed at the same time.

Copper, I used to shoot every day but now I have backed off... anyway I will change my strings every year that is strings and cables. Twisted Archer is my string maker. A set of custom strings is cheaper than a mass produced set that Collin shoots. Now I will say that I have never had a problem with Winners Choice well except for price. Cost more is not necessarily better... Vapor Trail, Carter (crackers) Strings, Buck Nasty and several others I have shot.. but Jamie at Twisted Archer made a set for me at a very good price and I have never left. As long as he makes strings... I will buy from him. Several guys on here also use his strings..
Now for why? I change every year for performance, string materials will stretch and you will loose just a little.. as time goes by. If you change your strings and cables each year.. you can re-tune your bow back to specs and keep the old string for back up.. for those little life lessons while shooting bow... you know which I am talking about...dropping a broad head and cutting a string..etc, etc..

Pat,
That makes sense. I just had them replaced, but next year I will check out the twisted archer. I will still need someone to put them in. I don't have a press.
I got my bow back today and can hopefully shoot tonight. The one thing I saw was that the old cable had 2 bow jacks , I'm assuming for silencing, But the new cable has servings on the top that won't except the jack on the top cable. They installed the bottom one. Is that going to be a problem? will it throw anything off? And can I replace them with another type of thing that will do the same thing, that attached to the string and not have to be thraeded thru the cable? It was original to the bow but I'm not opposed to changing them completely if I need them.

I always keep my cables and string in balance. What I mean is if I have a silencer on top there will be one on bottom, If I have a speed nock on top there will be one on bottom. It keeps the string the same weight and moving at the same speed top and bottom, call me annal if you want but that is how I am. If you have one string bat on bottom and not on top in your cables... remove the one or add one but never leave them one by themselves.
Think of it like this... I have 2 cars, one is a caddy and one is a VW... with their weight being different who would cause the string to move faster? Now if I had one on one end of my string (caddy) and one one other(VW) end of the string, which end of the string would move faster? Same thing with added weigh you have now...it very well could cause tuning issues.
Pat

I kinda figured as such but figured I'd ask. Is there anything I can put on there on the string as opposed to in it? The string bats are for dampening sound right?

Copper,
I think you are probably waisting time with them in your cables, sure I have them on mine but.. I also have bow jacks and they require you to press the bow and slide the them over the string.you may be able to install bow bats... you may be able to back your limb bolts out to the maximum and take as much tension off them as possible.. the using a pencil split your cable below the serving and install a bow bat. Now you must be sure you get the bat below where the cable winds over a cam or idler wheel. best way is to use white out and go to full draw with your bow and mark your string where the bat should go.
When using the pencil method take your time and gently slide the point into the string and separate the string or cable, push the pencil all the way in thus making room for the bat. I use two pencils, a regular #2 and a flat carpenters pencil with a small notch on either side. Once I get the #2 in I use the flat to take it's place it gives you more room to work with.
it's just a idea and it's something I have done before..and still do but it's up to you...
PS A Bowmaster press is cheap and it will come in handy for the future...plus you can take it with you any where...

Maybe I'll just use my string spliter and pull that one out. At laest that way the string will be balanced. And if it is a little noisier then I will deal with it then.
Thanks for the info.

If I had to change my string and cables every year, I would look for another brand. That is Excessive IMHO.

Pat you are right about the bowmaster press. I've got one and it is easy to use and is small enough put in your bow case or bow stuff box ( I use a small 3 tray tackle box ). I just put new Winner's Choice strings and cables on my newest bow ( A lefty Truth ). The strings thtat came on the bow were new but I put the Winner's Choice on it and will keep the new/old bear string as a backup in case something happens in the field. I did the same thing when I bought ny righty Truth 2 years ago. Those strings and cable are in good shape but I will be replacing them in the future.

Copper you might want to try a string tamer, STS or one of the many other string terminator/stoppers. I took off everything on my strings except the string loop and with the string tamer it is silent.

Tex,
I don't have a tapping in my riser. The only thing there is the bar for my cable guide to slide along. Unless they make one that could screw into that tapping and let the cable guide run along it too.

They make one that fits in the front of the riser where your stabalizer goes and you can still screw in your stabalizer.

I'll have to look them up. See if Cabelas has something to look at then go from there.
